Yesterday afternoon yet another accident occurred where a pedestrian was knocked down by a car on the corner of Vineyard and Main Roads.
This is just one of a spate of accidents on Claremont Main Road, indicating not only negligence by pedestrians who cross at their desire rather than at a designated pedestrian crossing.
There is a strong argument to be made, particularly at Vineyard and Main / Stegman and Main / Grove and Main and Campground and Main, that the pedestrian crossings are not indicated clearly or effectively.
Raised crossings and pedestrian central island refuge spaces would be engineering solutions which take away the primacy of the car on the road and give back the primacy of movement to the pedestrian.
The City of Cape Town Roads Transport Planning should be engaged in rethinking Claremont Main Road as a space where pedestrian movement is given preference over vehicular movement.
