The CIDC has once again successfully managed to assist in the rehabilitation, training and employment of a young Chrysalis Graduate.
Twenty-one year old Asive Mandodi from Crossroads was selected by the Chrysalis Academy in May 2015 for a three month youth development and rehabilitation programme after dropping out of school during his Grade 10 year. After spending three months at the Chrysalis Academy, he was placed at the office of the Claremont Improvement District Company, who assists graduates with providing them with experience and training in the workplace.
Asive who has been with the CIDC since August 2015, was identified by CIDC management as a hard worker who enjoys working with the public. He was put through a thorough interview and training process at Securitas and since December 2015 he has been a full-time and salaried security staff member at the CIDC.
When asked what advice he would like to give to other youth starting on the Chryalis programme his response is “stay motivated, be patient, have a plan for your life, be a survivor and don’t drop out”.
What is the Chrysalis Academy?
Chrysalis Academy is a youth and leadership organisation in Tokai, Cape Town. Established in 2000 in response to crime and substance abuse amongst the youth, it has grown to become a life-skills programme and a stepping stone to employment for young people from some of the province’s most deprived communities.
Chrysalis runs three 3-month courses a year, two for young men and one for young women. Apart from rigorous physical training in the outdoors, the programme offers a wide range of life skills and training, from managing a bank account to adapting to the workplace, advice on career development or further studies and psychological counselling.
Chrysalis admits only 200 students at a time but interviews as many as 600 applicants who meet the requirements, indicating that demand for the programme far outstrips its capacity to meet the need.
The students must have at least passed Grade 9.
