Police in Claremont may have busted a major crime syndicate in the area when they recovered goods to the value of more than R1m.
Claremont police spokesperson Sergeant Lindile Dubeni explains that they reacted to information received from suspects in another incident.
“We received surveillance from a house breaking where the suspects were known to the police,” he says.
“When we arrested the suspects and interrogated them information led us to the living quarters of caretakers at the Stegman Road Mosque.
While investigations are on-going, police believe that most of these items were stolen in the Claremont area where the crimes were committed and the stolen goods hidden quickly to avoid suspicion, explains Dubeni.
Police arrested two foreign nationals and two coloured men but believe that more people could be involved, he says.
“It seems to be a well-run syndicate and more people may be involved,” he says.
The police will be displaying the stolen goods at the station in Imam Haron Road on Saturday 23 July from 10:00 to 14:00, says Dubeni.
“People who have been victims of theft recently are welcome to come and identify these items,” he adds.
“What we will need from them is proof of ownership and their identity documents.”
